Crypto Telegram Scams: Fake Admins, Clone Groups and Support Bots

Telegram is where memecoin communities live — and where scammers hunt. Learn the most common crypto Telegram scams and the simple rules that stop them.

TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ

Almost every memecoin community runs on Telegram, which makes it the first place scammers go looking for victims. The good news: nearly every Telegram scam breaks one of a few simple rules. Learn the rules and you'll spot them instantly.

//1. Fake admins and "support" DMs

You post a question in a group. Seconds later, someone with the project's logo and "Admin" or "Support" in their name messages you to help. They'll ask you to "sync", "validate" or "rectify" your wallet on a website, or simply ask for your seed phrase.

Rule: real admins and support teams never DM you first, and nobody legitimate ever needs your seed phrase.

//2. Clone groups and channels

Scammers copy a project's group — same name, same logo, same pinned messages — and promote the clone in replies and search. Clones are often broadcast-only so nobody can warn you. Pinned links lead to fake claim pages.

Rule: only join groups linked from the project's official website or verified X account, and check the exact username.

//3. Fake verification bots

Some groups force new members to "verify" through a bot that asks you to connect a wallet or run a command. Real verification bots ask you to tap a button or solve a captcha — never to connect a wallet or paste anything into your browser or terminal.

Rule: if joining a chat requires connecting a wallet or running code, leave.

//4. Fake airdrops and claims

"Holders can claim their airdrop here" with a link — often to a perfect copy of a real site. The "claim" is a drainer signature. See wallet drainers and token approvals.

Rule: if you didn't expect an airdrop, assume it's not real. Verify claims only through the project's official channels.

//5. Copycat token contracts

During a hype run, people post "the real CA" in replies and DMs. Some are fakes. See fake tokens and address poisoning.

Rule: get the contract address from the official source and confirm it links back.

//6. Paid "alpha" groups and signal sellers

"Pay 0.5 SOL to join our VIP calls group." Many are just exit liquidity farms: the group owner buys first, the members pump it, the owner sells.

Rule: if someone is selling you early access, ask who's selling to you.

//7. Recovery scams

After a loss, "recovery specialists" or "blockchain investigators" appear offering to get your funds back for a fee. They can't.

Rule: nobody can reverse an on-chain transfer for a fee.

//The four rules that stop almost everything

  1. 01Never share your seed phrase or private key with anyone, ever.
  2. 02Nobody legitimate DMs you first.
  3. 03Never connect your wallet to a link you got from a DM, a reply or an unexpected message.
  4. 04Get contract addresses and links from official sources only.

//Researching tokens safely

You never need to connect a wallet to research a token. TrenchScore is read-only: paste a contract address into the search bar and get the contract audit, holders, bubblemap, community and market data — no wallet, no signatures. If someone asks you to connect a wallet to "check" a token, that's your answer.

//Frequently asked questions

Do crypto project admins DM you on Telegram?+

Legitimate admins and support teams don't DM you first. Unsolicited DMs offering help, airdrops or investment opportunities are almost always scams.

Is it safe to connect my wallet to a Telegram bot to verify?+

No. Real group verification only asks you to tap a button or solve a captcha. Any request to connect a wallet, sign a message or run code to join a group is a scam.
