Token Buy and Sell Taxes: How High Is Too High?

Some tokens charge a fee on every buy or sell. Learn how token taxes work, what's normal, why adjustable taxes are dangerous, and how to check before you trade.

TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ

A tax token takes a percentage of every buy, sell or transfer and sends it somewhere else — a marketing wallet, the liquidity pool, a burn address or holders as "reflections". Taxes are common on BNB Chain and Ethereum memecoins and rarer on Solana. They aren't a scam by themselves. The problems start when taxes are high, lopsided or changeable.

//How a token tax works

When you swap, the token contract skims its cut before the tokens reach you (on a buy) or before they reach the pool (on a sell). That's why tax tokens make you raise your slippage tolerance: a 5% tax looks to your wallet like 5% of slippage before any price movement. If your slippage is set too low, the trade fails.

//What's normal?

There's no official standard, but a rough guide traders use:

Tax per sideWhat it usually means
0%No tax — most Solana memecoins and many newer EVM launches
1–5%Common for "tax tokens" funding marketing or liquidity
6–10%Expensive: you need a large move just to break even
Over 10%Extreme. A round trip costs over 20% before price impact
Close to 100%A honeypot in disguise — you can sell, but you get nothing

Remember to count both sides. A 5% buy tax plus a 5% sell tax means the price must rise about 11% just for you to get back to even, before slippage and gas.

//Red flags

The owner can change the tax

This is the big one. A contract with a modifiable tax can launch at 0–5%, attract buyers, then raise the sell tax to 99% overnight. Security scanners flag this as "tax changeable" or "slippage modifiable". If the owner hasn't renounced and can change the tax, the current number means very little. See renounced ownership and proxy contracts.

Sell tax far higher than buy tax

A 0% buy / 25% sell structure is designed to make getting in feel free and getting out expensive.

Taxes routed to a private wallet

Where does the tax go? A tax that fills an anonymous wallet which sells every few minutes is constant sell pressure on the chart.

Hidden transfer fees on Solana

Solana's Token-2022 program supports a transfer-fee extension that charges on every transfer. It's legitimate in some designs, but you should know it's there. See Token-2022 extension risks.

//How to check a token's tax

  • Paste the contract into TrenchScore. On EVM tokens, the contract audit shows the buy tax and sell tax from a live simulation and flags whether the owner can change them. Solana tokens show any transfer fee.
  • Compare the tax to how you plan to trade. If you're scalping for 10–20%, a 10% round-trip tax eats most of your edge.

//Taxes and liquidity together

High taxes plus thin liquidity is the worst combination: the tax takes its share and then price impact takes another. Always look at what you'd actually receive on exit, not the chart price.

//The bottom line

A small, fixed, transparent tax is a design choice. A large, lopsided or adjustable tax is a trap waiting to be sprung. Check it before every buy — especially on tokens whose owner can still change the contract. For the rest of the routine, use the due diligence checklist.

//Frequently asked questions

Why do I need high slippage to buy some tokens?+

Tax tokens take a percentage of every trade inside the contract, which your wallet sees as slippage. If your slippage tolerance is below the tax, the swap fails. Check the token's tax before raising slippage — a very high requirement can signal a honeypot.

What is a reasonable token tax?+

Many tax tokens charge 1–5% per side. Above 10% per side is extreme, and any tax the owner can change at will is a serious risk regardless of its current level.

Can a token's tax be changed after I buy?+

Yes, if the contract allows the owner to modify fees and ownership hasn't been renounced. That's how a token with a low tax can be turned into a near-honeypot after launch.
