Trading Volume Explained: Real Demand vs Wash Trading

Volume is the most-watched and most-faked number in crypto. Learn what healthy volume looks like, how wash trading inflates it, and the signs that volume is fake.

TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··3 MIN READ

Trading volume is the total value of trades over a period — usually 24 hours. High volume means attention: people are buying and selling, the token is on screens, and there's activity to trade against. That's exactly why it's the number most often faked.

//Why volume matters

  • Attention. Trending lists on DEX screeners rank heavily on market activity, including volume. See how DEX Screener trending works.
  • Tradability. Steady two-way volume means you can enter and exit without moving the price much — as long as liquidity is there too. See why liquidity matters.
  • Momentum. Rising volume alongside rising price suggests real demand. See what is momentum.

//What is wash trading?

Wash trading is trading with yourself — buying and selling between wallets you control — to create the appearance of activity. On a DEX it costs only fees, and the payoff is visibility: trending placements, screener rankings and social posts showing "$2M volume in 24h".

How common is it? Chainalysis estimated up to $2.57 billion of suspected wash trading on the chains it analysed in 2024, and found that a small share of addresses did a large share of it. An academic study of two early Ethereum DEXs found that more than 30% of traded tokens had been subject to wash trading. Commercial "volume bots" sell this as a service.

//Signs volume is fake

SignalWhat it suggests
Huge volume, few unique tradersA handful of wallets trading back and forth
Volume many times larger than liquidity every dayTurnover no real market sustains
Buys and sells of near-identical size, seconds apartBot loops
Volume up, holder count flatActivity without new owners
Price barely moves despite massive volumeTrades cancelling each other out
Lots of tiny trades at regular intervalsTransaction-count farming for trending

None of these is proof alone. Together, they're a strong pattern.

//What healthy volume looks like

  • Volume grows with new holders and unique traders.
  • Buy and sell sizes vary — real people trade random amounts.
  • Volume relative to liquidity is high but not absurd — see volume-to-liquidity ratio.
  • Volume reacts to news, not to the clock.
  • The buy/sell split shifts over time — see buy/sell pressure.

//Volume per hour alive

A 24-hour volume figure means different things for a token that's 3 hours old and one that's 3 months old. Comparing volume to how long a token has been trading gives a fairer picture of real traction — a young token doing serious volume in its first hours is very different from an old one coasting on the same number.

//How TrenchScore looks at volume

TrenchScore looks at volume in context — against the token's age, its liquidity, its trade counts and the balance of buyers and sellers — rather than rewarding raw volume alone. That context feeds the momentum and market pillars of the TrenchScore, which makes inflated volume much less useful for gaming our rankings than it is for gaming a simple volume leaderboard.

//Frequently asked questions

What is wash trading in crypto?+

Wash trading is buying and selling between wallets you control to create fake volume. On DEXs it's used to climb trending lists and attract real buyers.

How can I tell if a token's volume is fake?+

Compare volume with unique traders, holder growth and liquidity. Huge volume from few wallets, repetitive same-size trades, and volume many times larger than liquidity are common signs.

Is high volume a good sign?+

Only with context. High volume with growing holders, varied trade sizes and solid liquidity suggests real demand; high volume without those can be manufactured.
