Volume-to-Liquidity Ratio: A 10-Second Token Health Check
Dividing 24h volume by liquidity tells you how hard a pool is working. Learn what a healthy volume-to-liquidity ratio looks like and what extreme readings mean.
TRENCHSCORE RESEARCH··2 MIN READ
Volume tells you how much is trading. Liquidity tells you how much the pool can absorb. Put them together and you get one of the quickest health checks there is: the volume-to-liquidity ratio, sometimes called pool turnover.
//How to read it
There are no official thresholds, and the right range depends on the token's age and the market's mood. As a rough guide for memecoins:
| Ratio (24h) | What it often means |
|---|---|
| Below 0.2 | Quiet. Little interest — fine for a mature token, a bad sign for a "trending" one |
| 0.2 – 2 | Active, healthy two-way trading |
| 2 – 10 | Hot. Lots of attention; expect big swings |
| Above 10, day after day | Unusual. Check for bots, wash trading or a pump about to unwind |
//Why very high ratios deserve a second look
A pool turning over its entire value many times a day can be real — a brand-new launch in its first hours often does — but sustained extreme turnover is also what wash trading looks like. Cross-check with:
- Unique traders and holder growth. Real turnover brings new holders.
- Trade size variety. Bots repeat sizes; people don't.
- Price movement. Massive volume with a flat price can be trades cancelling each other out.
//Why very low ratios matter too
Low turnover on a token being pushed as "trending" suggests the attention is paid, not organic — see DEX paid, boosts and ads. Low turnover also means fewer counterparties when you want to sell.
//Volume-to-market-cap
A related ratio divides volume by market cap. It's useful for comparing tokens of different sizes, but it can mislead when liquidity is thin relative to market cap — a token can show healthy volume-to-market-cap while its pool is too shallow to exit. Use both, and always check liquidity directly.
//Age changes everything
A two-hour-old token naturally has a high ratio: everything is new and everyone is trading it. A three-month-old token with the same ratio is in a very different situation. Comparing activity to how long a token has existed is fairer than comparing raw 24-hour figures. See the first 24 hours of a new token.
//How TrenchScore uses it
TrenchScore's market panel shows volume and liquidity together on every token page so you can calculate the ratio in your head. Turnover, age-adjusted activity and liquidity depth are among the signals behind the momentum and market pillars of the TrenchScore.
//Frequently asked questions
What is a good volume to liquidity ratio?+
For most memecoins, a 24-hour ratio between roughly 0.2 and 2 reflects healthy two-way trading. Sustained readings far above 10 deserve a check for bots or wash trading; very low readings mean little real interest.
How do I calculate the volume to liquidity ratio?+
Divide the token's 24-hour trading volume by the current liquidity in its pool. Both numbers are shown on every TrenchScore token page.
